Week 30

Current weight 13 stone 4.5…which is roughly 84.59kg or 186.5lbs

I can’t deny I was frustrated by the 1/2lb loss initially this morning, mostly because I know what I weighed yesterday morning. That being said, putting on my smart work trousers which I had not worn for a couple of week, I felt better as they are approaching the stage where I can no longer wear them as they are too loose around my waist now! So, I am slimmer, even if the scales this week did not show it.

Exciting news with regards to spending for this month, I am very much below my target of £200 but you will have to wait for next week for a breakdown on this and the main changes that have enabled this to occur. You may be surprised at how easy it has been, keeping up to it, however, is what we need.

Just also want to share a recipe that one of my vegan followers tried by adapting my Oatmeal Breakfast Cookies using mashed banana, peanut butter, cocoa powder and oats. Baked for 10 minutes at 200 c.

I always like to be sent variations I should add, or new recipes to include even!

He did comment that they turned out a bit bitter due to the cocoa powder, but I suggested perhaps a little soya milk might lesson the taste of the cocoa so we shall see.

I have added a new recipe in recently, the Noodles, Sauce and Veg, one that I tried a few weeks ago but only just got around to putting up. A rather quick lunchtime meal for those days when in a rush but you have a microwave to hand.

MyFitnessPal has been going well, as I can now clearly see how much or as to a certain extent how little I am eating and have added another snack into my day. You may say well you can lose weight quicker if you eat less, but actually, this is about a healthy body and I didn’t want a diet I wanted to eat healthily and lose weight but as a lifestyle choice. Once my body it happy with the weight I hope to just remain eating the same or similar quantity of food and no longer lose weight.

Lastly, slowly I am making some changes to the look and feel of the website to make it more pleasing, if you just read the weekly blogs in your email you won’t notice any difference, however, this navigation of the recipes are now a lot easier to follow. So onwards and upwards!

Week 28

Current weight 13 stone 4.25…which is roughly 84.48kg or 186.25lbs

Yes you are reading correctly, I have lost 2 lbs over the past week! And I am quite impressed with that but this past week I have made some interesting discoveries. After just over a week on MyFitnessPal, it transpires that yes, I was actually under eating, considerably. Some days I was only eating around 900 calories. Now you could say that I should have lost weight but actually, I do a cycle class once a week (mega high intensity) and I swim (which I hate but no choice) a couple of times a week too, so if you include the exercise, my poor body was being starved of food and holding on to it for dear life I think! Yes that really does happen. There were a lot of links to read about this, but I found this one ‘click here‘ the easiest read. But using MyFitnessPal also enabled me to realise I had stopped eating snacks twice a day as well (despite having them in the freezer pre-made) I had just been eating 3 small meals a day.

So, I added back my popcorn and my mid morning snack and I lose 2lbs! In addition to this, I also realised my portion sizes were a lot small than before I started on this journey. This is not a bad thing I should add, actually on Saturday I went out to eat with my niece to Korean Cowgirl, not sure totally about the calories but put it as 900 as some of it was fried and some was ribs covered in sauce! The interesting fact for me was though we shared 3 portions of different things and I actually knew when I was full, and in the past I could have eaten it all on my own, in fact back in January I ate more than I should have on a meal out, on this occasion I just thought, I have had enough, not bloated full, just enough.

The next 7 days could be interesting though, still no fizzy drinks or chocolate or crisps…but, I may be out for a meal Friday night, it is my birthday at the weekend, and I am out for a meal next Monday night!!! Who has a meal the night before a weigh-in, I didn’t think that through…

Week 27

Current weight 13 stone 6.25…which is roughly 85.39kg or 188.25lbs

So, I gained a 3/4lb but considering what I lost when ill, I am quite happy that I have only gained a 3/4lb. That being said, I was interested in why earlier this month despite no snacks or treats I wasn’t losing weight. I decided to track my calories on MyFitnessPal.

Today is a prime example of perhaps the problem. I have not been calorie counting on the diet per se, just changed the portion size and eating cheaper better meals. Today I had breakfast, lunch and dinner, and a banana mid morning. I would normally swim on a Tuesday (not one of life’s swimmers I should add so do not think I am a cardio junkie doing this!) and have my evening meal when I get home. When I tracked my calories I came in at just over 1000 calories, not good and if I have been eating like that for weeks no wonder I wasn’t losing weight, my body has been holding onto all food! Maybe not true ‘starvation mode‘ but click to read the interesting article on this.

So back in August, I had snack bars and popcorn for late afternoon or mid morning, time to continue with those I think. This was never meant to be a calorie controlled diet, it was about healthy eating but not spending too much money doing it. With this in mind I will aim to snack perhaps once or twice more a day and stick with MyFitnessPal for a whilst just to keep an eye on how much I am eating. This app is free and can be used on your phone or a computer if you fancy having a go!

Week 26

Current weight 13 stone 5.5…which is roughly 82.05kg or 187.5lbs

I can see you all thinking yay! You have lost 5.5lbs, actually I have a nasty sore throat and food has been limited over the past 4 days shall we say. So although I am, happy this is a false weight loss.

I do not have much else to report this week (I had recipes to try at the weekend but spent that on the sofa) I did notice something funny though. When I weigh myself, I actually realised I hold my stomach in…I wondered if anyone else does that? I mean how bizarre is that!

Almost forgot, day 29 and still no fizzy drinks!!!! (Or chocolate or crisps!) The question is, do I drink or eat any of them this Friday…

Week 19

Current weight 13 stone 11…which is roughly 87.54kg or 193lbs

As Christmas approaches and I had my 2nd Christmas meal of the week today I am trying to look at making good choices as well as trying not to notice the 1lb gain. I have been back on the cheaper fizzy drink for a week now and it has not made much difference with my HR so far, so we shall see how things are in a couple of weeks time (I think that makes it Christmas day!)

Over the next few weeks I am hoping to start looking at lunches as opposed to dinners to see what different easy pre-made meals I can come up with, keep looking under recipes though as I have been adding meals most weeks and you may just miss them as I do not always mention them in here. I also want to try to see if I can find some Christmas snacks that are cost-effective and tasty.

I did recently come across an interesting article for anyone out there who runs but wonders why they may not be losing weight. I know I say you can’t out run an unhealthy diet, and that is true but there is more to it than that so have a little read of 3 Running Traps That Halt Weight Loss and I shall be back next week, happy to maintain and even happier if I could have lost a lb in weight!

Week 18

Current weight 13 stone 10.25…which is roughly 87.2kg or 192.25lbs

A gain of 1lb but I am happy with that, I am surprised I have not gained all the weight I lost, and am slightly fearful now of this month, as December is a month that people can end up some times overeating or use it as an excuse. Maybe next week I can look at that in more detail. This week the focus is back on money again!

Now just like August, for November I managed to keep every single receipt that I spent on food. I allocated myself £250 to spend as I felt £200 was just not an option having tried for the previous 2 months to no avail. In addition I am also feeding mini me twice a week and so the extra takes that into account.

So, for November, I did actually get it down to £288.74 (according to YNAB) which is again over my budget so what did I actually spent that much money on? Unlike August when I was home on leave for two weeks, in November I was actually ill for over a week, and have a house guest who cooks some of my meals which leads me to contemplate, where did I spend this money!

Money spent on actual food for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks: £116.20

£48.63 – Waitrose, £35.03 – Tesco, £20.28 Oaten Hill, £5.24 – Thai shop, £7.02 – Aldi

As we can see am spending less now in Waitrose, but Oaten Hill is a newsagent, where I have spent a lot of that £20.28 on drink…

Money spent on meals out some of which was budgeted for: £126.68

£50 – Ghurka Dine (my friend and I alternate dinner once a month, this is budgeted separately to my food)

£30.60 – Beano Cafe (I take mini me for breakfast on a Sunday morning),

£6.68 – McDonald’s, (I am impressed as fast food is not healthy!)

£54.55 – Chips from Chippie (the chips are for me, mini me and mini me’s partner).

Money spent on Fizzy Drinks and other not needed items: £80.71 (yes that is over £20 less than last time!!!)

£14.54 – Oaten Hill newsagent, £2.80 – Boots, £33.25 – University at work (sadly that was mostly fizzy drinks). £15 – Cash Point (spent on food and drinks only). £15.12 – Various supermarkets for alcohol.

Now this does add up to £323.59 but that is automatically £50 less as that was budgeted separately. So for once I have managed to accurately keep track and am down to £288.74. Not quite the £200 I would like (although £54.55 was chip for 3 over the month and realistically about £15 of that was spent on me. If that so, that actually makes it £250 ish) but with December now upon us…well the budget will be carefully watched shall we say, but with extras I can’t see it staying that low. I will next visit this in February, a shorter month and the opportunity to really take stock of food purchased.

Week 17

Current weight 13 stone 9.25…which is roughly 86.75kg or 191.25lbs

Well, since I last weighed in 2 weeks ago you may notice I have lost nearly 4lbs, that of course has all been mostly caused by me being ill and as of today I am still not able to eat a healthy diet. Well healthy in that I am not really eating that much due to having a stomach virus. This kind of weigh loss of course is not good, as I should once totally healthy return to the weight I was before I fell ill.

Good news though having stopped drinking Tesco’s fizzy water 2 weeks and 4 days ago my resting heart rate (despite me being ill) has actually dropped down to 65. To see what that looks like here is my resting heart rate over the past 30 days. The flat section from last week was when my Fitbit stopped working  should add, and also when I was first ill.

This weekend I do aim if I can that is to return and drink it again for a week just to see if it takes my heart rate back up again, but I think you can agree this is quite damning!

I haven’t had a chance to do much cooking over the past week, but if I am able do intend to do a low-cost healthy chicken pie this weekend if I am up to it. Hard to cook though when you have zero appetite!

And to end, I came across this article last month, and actually found it quite interesting. Worth a read I think as it made me think, am I doing what it says…no videos of what I eat in a day though ever I promise!

Week 12

Current weight 13 stone 8.5…which is roughly 86.41kg or 190.5lbs

The past week I have to say has absolutely flown by and another lb has been lost which is a great feeling I must say. In past diets I have lost a couple of lbs or even more a week but as this is not a diet just a change of eating I am happy as my body adjusts to what I am feeding it and I no longer have the urge to reach for the crisps and chocolate. What I suppose surprises me the most is actually lunch, I have not put much lunch under the recipes yet and for that I apologise, I have been eating a similar lunch of a wrap every day just with a change of fillings now and then and I guess I wanted to have more lunches before I started to populate that area, but a page and wraps I think will be good.

We are still having a few teething issues with the new site, apparently none of you can comment on anything, some of you sometimes miss this weekly blog and one of you gets blank pages on a Tuesday afternoon! We are working very hard behind the scenes to rectify this before I advertise the site more as poor Zoe after 3 attempts has still not be able to even follow the blog which makes me wonder how many people I don’t actually know are having that same issue.

Those of you looking I have been adding dinner recipes most weeks now, because they are pages and not blog posts you do not get emailed about this so do check the recipe section weekly as I do add something each week and if you wish to share your own meals, feel free to email or message me if you are unable to comment.

Last week was very busy for me in terms of teaching load and although that can keep away the snacking issues (I must confess I have not snacked beyond my set snacks for a while now!) I did consume on some of the days last week 6 (yes that does say 6) bottles of Dr Pepper Zero…and as this is about saving money as well as losing weight and eating healthily that is what I call ‘wasted drink’ in my YNAB app. as I wasted on the days I had 6 a grand total of £7.80 a day and most days last week I had 6 bottles. However, I may have found a solution to minimise this! Initially a friend suggested making my own Dr Pepper drink, I looked and even found the ingredients on Amazon and was thinking I may go for it but then, found an easier solution, fizzy water and lime cordial…Yes, I am aware I am using an old bottle from my favourite drink before anyone comments, but it was there and I like a bit of recycling, and I have to say it does actually work. This one was made using a 1 litre bottle which cost 53p and I already had lime cordial in the house to be honest. I also bought a pack of 6 fizzy waters for £1.54 I think and had been topping them up with the cordial to drink. What I wanted to see though was would they hold sufficient ‘fizz’ to keep me satisfied? Actually although slightly flatter than the drink was the moment I opened it, these are not bad and if I were to drink 6 of these a day (I may keep a large bottle and some cordial in my office) it won’t be costing me much over £2 which although still a waste of money is easier to swallow than what I have been spending.

Week 11

Current weight 13 stone 9.5…which is roughly 86.86kg or 191.5lbs

Wow, I can’t believe I had been doing this blog now for 11 weeks, August 1st when I first weighed in feels like a lifetime away and, I was quite surprised to see the 1lb loss this morning, and yet very happy! The last week has not been the easiest. Having a lodger in the house has benefits but also pushes my resolve to the limit as well as we went out for breakfast Sunday morning. I struggled to stay on top of pre preparing my lunch so not all days had the consistency I had worked so hard on keeping to, but 12 days without a lay in was starting to take control by Friday. Breakfast became a banana and fizzy drinks are back up to 4 a day… £5.20 a day wasted on fizzy drinks, I am not happy with that. However, despite all that I did not reach for bad snacks and that is why I still lost 1lb.

I did try 2 new recipes, firstly the chickpea, spinach and egg curry followed by butternut squash dhal. Both for me were great tasting and a welcome addition to the dinner recipes and am looking forward to someone else trying them or variations.

In addition a couple of my students came to my lesson today with their own take on the 5 ingredient peanut butter and banana energy bars. These are not dieting students, these are healthy men who also happen to be vegetarian and looking to widen their cooking skills with healthy meals and snacks! It got the thumbs up from me.

Snack made by Alex and Joe!

Week 10

Current weight 13 stone 10.5…which is roughly 87.32kg or 192.5lbs

So I have a lot to talk about this week, but of course am happy to share I have lost another lb, happy because due to the stresses again of the past week  more than one day I was just too tired and busy to make my lunch and so had to make the right choices at work whilst being annoyed I was spending money when I didn’t need to! But, another lb so I am very happy.

If you haven’t already noticed, clicking on Recipes in the main navigation will now take you to a drop down menu where you can now start to access some of the recipes I have found online which are healthy and less costly and have helped me to lose weight in a slow but healthy way. Let me know what you think or if you have other recipes you would like me to try and share here.

In addition, at the request of follower Zoe, I tried pineapple with cottage cheese on a pizza at the weekend! Now I must confess I made it Hawaiian so added a little chorizo and in addition did half cottage cheese half mozzarella because I was curios which I would prefer. But yes, pineapple and cottage cheese on a pizza works very well, as does for the non vegetarians the chorizo with the mozzarella.

Tasty pineapple, cottage cheese and a few additions.

Then Monday night, after being cooked a lovely Bolognese by an Italian friend on Saturday, I used the left overs to make another pizza with included a little mozzarella and left over chickpeas I had already baked in paprika.

Bolognese with mozzarella and chickpeas.

I have got to say this was one of the nicest pizzas I have made yet, even the base was really crispy and held which is doesn’t always do I can tell you! I am not sure when I will next have left over Bolognese but if I do have it again it going on a pizza definitely. (I should add my Italian friend was less than impressed when they heard I made a pizza with it…)
