Week 41

Current weight 12 stone 8.25 lbs…which is roughly 79.94 kg or 176.25 lbs

I can’t actually believe it is week 41 already, made me realise in 11 weeks I have actually been doing this for a whole year! Do you like how I start with that! And yes, as you can see I have broken through the barrier of the 80kgs!!! I actually was weighed at the doctor’s on Friday morning where they seemed to think I was 78kgs! Now as I was standing on the scale looking down at it I can guarantee I was so not 78kgs, interestingly though it did put me slightly under 80 which just means my scales are not the same. I trust my scales though so will stick with this record! On an even better level, back into an old pair of trousers as well…only one more item to go and then I am actually happy. It was never really about the numbers and when I look in the mirror I am very happy with what I see. I don’t really think I can afford to lose much more than 1/2 a stone now or will perhaps be too skinny, but again that is my view of how I look not the view of others.

This week I have a two things to share, firstly one of my followers sent me a picture of their cauliflower pakora!

IMG_20190512_125910051

So a shout out to Hazel for this. Her verdict was yummy! Please DM me if you make one of the items as I love to see how they turn out and if others love them as much as I do.

Secondly, linked to a while back I made a Traybake and I have to say it is the only time I made something that I really did not like and it put me off of trying chickpea for a while again in a sweet tasting snack, well until the past weekend! Yes, last Saturday I decided despite no one asking me, to try the Chocolate Chickpea Fudge and OMG how tasty is that. I had to actually freeze some of them to stop me eating the whole batch… I did, however, not take any images and so can’t add it to the list of snacks yet but for those who are willing to try here is the recipe (although apologies that you need to scroll for miles before you reach it, part of the reason I add the recipe myself on here to save you time!) The only change I made was that I used agave syrup instead of maple, but not only could you so could not taste the chickpea, it was divine!

Week 36

Current weight 12 stone 12 lbs…which is roughly 81.64 kg or 180 lbs

So, in the past week I had 2 dinners out, 1 breakfast out and 2 alcoholic drinks…and I would love to blame them for my 1/4lb loss, but am at a loss so to speak as I know what I weighed yesterday and what I ate yesterday. But this is somewhat key, because I weigh myself every day I am used to the fluctuation of how it changes on a day-to-day basis. For instance, sometimes if I go back to bed for half hour it drops a further 1/2lb and sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes if I take my nightshirt off I drop a whole lb again and sometimes I don’t. And sometimes, when you want to drop below 180lbs it just won’t let you and is making you wait another week! But a loss is a loss. After what I ate last week I am actually happy and willing to wait for next Tuesday, when I have a wedding to go to…

This week, I wish to share an app I came across last week, it is a bit rough around the edges but is called…Comparasaurus – it is free and can work for iPhones and for Android as well and takes all the leading supermarket brands and tells you the cheapest place you can buy items. What I found useful about it this week was the fact that although I thought my local wholefood shop may be slightly costly, it turns out it is the cheapest place to buy popcorn kernels.

Week 35

Current weight 12 stone 12.25lbs…which is roughly 81.76 kg or 180.25 lbs

Now, it is interesting to look at this weeks weigh in for me, as I am happy to have lost another lb. Any weight loss is great when I consider how much I am eating each day. The right choices make all the difference and we shall try not to think about the fact I am eating out Wednesday evening (already picked from the menu what I want) and Friday evening I am out for an Indian (thinking of the left overs I shall be eating over the weekend so long-term saving money).

What really made me laugh this week though is I normally copy and paste the top bit from the previous week and no one noticed I had put 12 stone 1.25 lbs which would actually have been over a stone lost! To be fair I never noticed that until today. The past week I had gone back to one of my favourite meals which was homemade pizza. I am also on the look out for new meals to make and add to my cheap but healthy list of recipes. I particularly am looking for meals which can be frozen as they are financially the best way to go and also mean you only need to batch cook every few week. So if you have any batch meal ideas especially for breakfast or dinner please le me know.

Finally, it is wrong that I am so looking forward to being 170 something lbs and 70 something kgs. I thought dropping below a stone line was exciting but actually dropping those also are exciting as sometime we need a bit motivation and half a lb will see me below 180 lbs, a bit more for the kgs but I can wait for a couple of weeks to get past that, trust me!

Week 33

Current weight 13 stone 1…which is roughly 83 kg or 183 lbs

Wow, 1/4 lb I must confess when I weighed myself yesterday I did not think I was going to lose weight today. The past week has been incredibly busy, I have stayed on track with ensuring I had food prepped in advance I should add. But on Friday to reward myself (the suggestion was a Chinese but actually I do not believe anymore that food should be seen as a treat!) I had after 2 months and 15 days my first fizzy drink (zero calorie). I have to say what I was hoping for was my mouth to say ‘yuk’, the reality is it tasted just as nice as I remember it tasting. But I have proven to myself that having one, did not immediately result in me returning to drinking it every day.

I do sincerely believe that moving over the boundary between weights is psychologically harder than it actually is, getting below 14 stone felt like a challenge and now getting below 13 stone is proving to be the same, but I have confidence I will do it if I keep to my own rules that food is fuel, it is there to enable you to live and function and is not a treat that you earn through hard work. You can eat whatever you want when you want, but if you eat more calories than you burn you won’t lose weight and may end up putting it on, that is a fact.

In case you are wondering why the incredibly busy week is an excuse? Actually my main reason for not thinking I would lose weight is I went out for dinner last night. I do this once a month (although didn’t last month) and we didn’t eat until 8pm, when I normally eat around 6pm or if it is later it is not a large meal! Last night I had a yummy risotto from Prezzo which they allege is only 471 calories, I am not so convinced but know it had the least calories on the whole menu, and even if it didn’t, I really love risotto so would have still had it, just not so late.

The challenge in the week ahead? Well things have shown no sign of slowing down at the moment, and this Saturday I am driving to Derby and back in one day via Birmingham and so meals will be dictated sadly, although breakfast not so much. Then next Sunday I am taking my father and niece out for our birthdays (yes I know they were all last month but it was the first date we were all free). So, am hopefully going to break the 13 stone mark, but actually….even more hopeful to get into my smaller work trousers as the larger ones are hanging off me!!! And yes, I know I still need to add the blueberry oatcakes recipe! Having frozen them and now eating the frozen ones…still as good I need to say.

Week 30

Current weight 13 stone 4.5…which is roughly 84.59kg or 186.5lbs

I can’t deny I was frustrated by the 1/2lb loss initially this morning, mostly because I know what I weighed yesterday morning. That being said, putting on my smart work trousers which I had not worn for a couple of week, I felt better as they are approaching the stage where I can no longer wear them as they are too loose around my waist now! So, I am slimmer, even if the scales this week did not show it.

Exciting news with regards to spending for this month, I am very much below my target of £200 but you will have to wait for next week for a breakdown on this and the main changes that have enabled this to occur. You may be surprised at how easy it has been, keeping up to it, however, is what we need.

Just also want to share a recipe that one of my vegan followers tried by adapting my Oatmeal Breakfast Cookies using mashed banana, peanut butter, cocoa powder and oats. Baked for 10 minutes at 200 c.

I always like to be sent variations I should add, or new recipes to include even!

He did comment that they turned out a bit bitter due to the cocoa powder, but I suggested perhaps a little soya milk might lesson the taste of the cocoa so we shall see.

I have added a new recipe in recently, the Noodles, Sauce and Veg, one that I tried a few weeks ago but only just got around to putting up. A rather quick lunchtime meal for those days when in a rush but you have a microwave to hand.

MyFitnessPal has been going well, as I can now clearly see how much or as to a certain extent how little I am eating and have added another snack into my day. You may say well you can lose weight quicker if you eat less, but actually, this is about a healthy body and I didn’t want a diet I wanted to eat healthily and lose weight but as a lifestyle choice. Once my body it happy with the weight I hope to just remain eating the same or similar quantity of food and no longer lose weight.

Lastly, slowly I am making some changes to the look and feel of the website to make it more pleasing, if you just read the weekly blogs in your email you won’t notice any difference, however, this navigation of the recipes are now a lot easier to follow. So onwards and upwards!

Week 28

Current weight 13 stone 4.25…which is roughly 84.48kg or 186.25lbs

Yes you are reading correctly, I have lost 2 lbs over the past week! And I am quite impressed with that but this past week I have made some interesting discoveries. After just over a week on MyFitnessPal, it transpires that yes, I was actually under eating, considerably. Some days I was only eating around 900 calories. Now you could say that I should have lost weight but actually, I do a cycle class once a week (mega high intensity) and I swim (which I hate but no choice) a couple of times a week too, so if you include the exercise, my poor body was being starved of food and holding on to it for dear life I think! Yes that really does happen. There were a lot of links to read about this, but I found this one ‘click here‘ the easiest read. But using MyFitnessPal also enabled me to realise I had stopped eating snacks twice a day as well (despite having them in the freezer pre-made) I had just been eating 3 small meals a day.

So, I added back my popcorn and my mid morning snack and I lose 2lbs! In addition to this, I also realised my portion sizes were a lot small than before I started on this journey. This is not a bad thing I should add, actually on Saturday I went out to eat with my niece to Korean Cowgirl, not sure totally about the calories but put it as 900 as some of it was fried and some was ribs covered in sauce! The interesting fact for me was though we shared 3 portions of different things and I actually knew when I was full, and in the past I could have eaten it all on my own, in fact back in January I ate more than I should have on a meal out, on this occasion I just thought, I have had enough, not bloated full, just enough.

The next 7 days could be interesting though, still no fizzy drinks or chocolate or crisps…but, I may be out for a meal Friday night, it is my birthday at the weekend, and I am out for a meal next Monday night!!! Who has a meal the night before a weigh-in, I didn’t think that through…

Week 27

Current weight 13 stone 6.25…which is roughly 85.39kg or 188.25lbs

So, I gained a 3/4lb but considering what I lost when ill, I am quite happy that I have only gained a 3/4lb. That being said, I was interested in why earlier this month despite no snacks or treats I wasn’t losing weight. I decided to track my calories on MyFitnessPal.

Today is a prime example of perhaps the problem. I have not been calorie counting on the diet per se, just changed the portion size and eating cheaper better meals. Today I had breakfast, lunch and dinner, and a banana mid morning. I would normally swim on a Tuesday (not one of life’s swimmers I should add so do not think I am a cardio junkie doing this!) and have my evening meal when I get home. When I tracked my calories I came in at just over 1000 calories, not good and if I have been eating like that for weeks no wonder I wasn’t losing weight, my body has been holding onto all food! Maybe not true ‘starvation mode‘ but click to read the interesting article on this.

So back in August, I had snack bars and popcorn for late afternoon or mid morning, time to continue with those I think. This was never meant to be a calorie controlled diet, it was about healthy eating but not spending too much money doing it. With this in mind I will aim to snack perhaps once or twice more a day and stick with MyFitnessPal for a whilst just to keep an eye on how much I am eating. This app is free and can be used on your phone or a computer if you fancy having a go!

Week 26

Current weight 13 stone 5.5…which is roughly 82.05kg or 187.5lbs

I can see you all thinking yay! You have lost 5.5lbs, actually I have a nasty sore throat and food has been limited over the past 4 days shall we say. So although I am, happy this is a false weight loss.

I do not have much else to report this week (I had recipes to try at the weekend but spent that on the sofa) I did notice something funny though. When I weigh myself, I actually realised I hold my stomach in…I wondered if anyone else does that? I mean how bizarre is that!

Almost forgot, day 29 and still no fizzy drinks!!!! (Or chocolate or crisps!) The question is, do I drink or eat any of them this Friday…

Week 19

Current weight 13 stone 11…which is roughly 87.54kg or 193lbs

As Christmas approaches and I had my 2nd Christmas meal of the week today I am trying to look at making good choices as well as trying not to notice the 1lb gain. I have been back on the cheaper fizzy drink for a week now and it has not made much difference with my HR so far, so we shall see how things are in a couple of weeks time (I think that makes it Christmas day!)

Over the next few weeks I am hoping to start looking at lunches as opposed to dinners to see what different easy pre-made meals I can come up with, keep looking under recipes though as I have been adding meals most weeks and you may just miss them as I do not always mention them in here. I also want to try to see if I can find some Christmas snacks that are cost-effective and tasty.

I did recently come across an interesting article for anyone out there who runs but wonders why they may not be losing weight. I know I say you can’t out run an unhealthy diet, and that is true but there is more to it than that so have a little read of 3 Running Traps That Halt Weight Loss and I shall be back next week, happy to maintain and even happier if I could have lost a lb in weight!

Week 18

Current weight 13 stone 10.25…which is roughly 87.2kg or 192.25lbs

A gain of 1lb but I am happy with that, I am surprised I have not gained all the weight I lost, and am slightly fearful now of this month, as December is a month that people can end up some times overeating or use it as an excuse. Maybe next week I can look at that in more detail. This week the focus is back on money again!

Now just like August, for November I managed to keep every single receipt that I spent on food. I allocated myself £250 to spend as I felt £200 was just not an option having tried for the previous 2 months to no avail. In addition I am also feeding mini me twice a week and so the extra takes that into account.

So, for November, I did actually get it down to £288.74 (according to YNAB) which is again over my budget so what did I actually spent that much money on? Unlike August when I was home on leave for two weeks, in November I was actually ill for over a week, and have a house guest who cooks some of my meals which leads me to contemplate, where did I spend this money!

Money spent on actual food for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks: £116.20

£48.63 – Waitrose, £35.03 – Tesco, £20.28 Oaten Hill, £5.24 – Thai shop, £7.02 – Aldi

As we can see am spending less now in Waitrose, but Oaten Hill is a newsagent, where I have spent a lot of that £20.28 on drink…

Money spent on meals out some of which was budgeted for: £126.68

£50 – Ghurka Dine (my friend and I alternate dinner once a month, this is budgeted separately to my food)

£30.60 – Beano Cafe (I take mini me for breakfast on a Sunday morning),

£6.68 – McDonald’s, (I am impressed as fast food is not healthy!)

£54.55 – Chips from Chippie (the chips are for me, mini me and mini me’s partner).

Money spent on Fizzy Drinks and other not needed items: £80.71 (yes that is over £20 less than last time!!!)

£14.54 – Oaten Hill newsagent, £2.80 – Boots, £33.25 – University at work (sadly that was mostly fizzy drinks). £15 – Cash Point (spent on food and drinks only). £15.12 – Various supermarkets for alcohol.

Now this does add up to £323.59 but that is automatically £50 less as that was budgeted separately. So for once I have managed to accurately keep track and am down to £288.74. Not quite the £200 I would like (although £54.55 was chip for 3 over the month and realistically about £15 of that was spent on me. If that so, that actually makes it £250 ish) but with December now upon us…well the budget will be carefully watched shall we say, but with extras I can’t see it staying that low. I will next visit this in February, a shorter month and the opportunity to really take stock of food purchased.
